Reader’s Letter to The Guardian

Dear Editor,

I read Damian Carrington’s piece (The Guardidan, 18th March 2021) on plastic in food and water being passed on to placentas, foetuses and babies. This is indeed very worrying.

But the thing that I missed in the article was mention of “tyre-dust”: Here in Germany over one hundred thousand tonnes of this toxic microplastic is produced/emitted each year. That particulate dust lands up in our lungs, on agricultural land, in waterways and in the oceans.

So it is important that, in coverage of the problem of plastic pollution, this major contributing factor is clearly mentioned.
